Is this happening after running the heater for a longer period of time? Like at least a half hour? It takes a while to warm up the inside of the heater and get everything up to temp so all of the oil burns. Be sure everything is getting good and hot. I would think as long as everything is good and hot it shouldnt smoke after shutting down.

I do believe you can get an efficient burn with a drip style and no forced air, although I have never done it before myself. Check around the forum and see if you can gather some ideas on what might be causing your incomplete burn. Good luck!

Interesting question on the Efel stove. I dont think I have ever heard of anyone using one with waste oil, but it would be interesting to see if it would work.
Enjoy the forum. It is more of an archive of info than a thriving discussion spot, but even still, there is some good info out here.

I cant remember the differences, but this is a recommended one for waste oil and are often times used for metering pumps as well:

I'm not saying they wont, but I don't think the stock pumps are designed for pumping waste oil. I ran my pressure system for a long time and never had any problems with whatever was on it.
Sounds like you have some perfecting to do to keep your fuel line hot. Hopefully you can find a way to keep it warm and keep the flame running smooth as well.

If you are running a stock beckett, I would highly recommend a CK kit:

Yes, it costs some money, but once you have it you will be burning WMO so easily that the all of the free fuel will pay for it in no time.
Yea, ceramic wool might be a good option as well, but I think the brick would come up to temp pretty quickly as well. Might have to experiment with both.

Are you running your becket stock? If so, have you looked at the CK burner modification? With preheated oil, you should have instant starts with WMO.
I think you are on the right track with needing something to contain or shoot the fire on to. From what I understand any kind of steel will break down pretty quick. Fire brick might be a good option.

I dont have any recommendations for you but wanted to say you have an interesting project going and I would hate to see you scrap everything and go back to wood. But, if there isnt a good way to achieve a good burn and use the heat efficiently versus sending it out the exhaust, maybe this style of heater just wont work. It sounds like you have a creative side to you and I would encourage you to give some other things a try before giving up.
I have heard of people dripping old dirty oil, stuff beyond being able to be used in a pressure or siphon system, into a wood furnace. This is used in conjunction with wood. You woudl probably still be in the same situation with heat going out the exhaust. Heat extraction before going out the exhaust is probably where you will have to concentrate.
