Sounds good, looks like a much more active crowd over there for sure.  Good luck with the heater and thanks for sharing the link!

Yep, still in use.  I dont use it full time, just on occasion when I want it warmer in the garage or on the coldest days of witer.

Yes, that is indeed a nice boiler!  I think Doug on the forum here had one very similar.  He has a nice writeup on the form under user projects.  It has a very nice deep burn chamber.  But yes, that is a lot of money for sure.

Man, its been a while since I have had to recall that info so I cant say for sure.  I am sure the recommended length is hiding in a post somewhere out here, but I'm not exactly sure where.  If you can, adding a length of pipe to pull the burner away from the heater may help.  I had to do that to some extent with my shallow boiler:

I think the reason you don't see many water heaters converted is because of the room needed for the flame.  I believe waste oil takes longer to burn and benefits from a larger burn chamber and a water heater just doesn't have the room.  Not saying it won't work, but maybe just not as efficiently as a boiler with a larger burn chamber.  I have no doubt the ckburner conversion will get you up and going.  Good luck and let us know how your project goes!

Interesting pump.  Hope it holds in there.  Yea, it sure is nice to have things just run without babysitting all of the time for sure.  So is the pump dumping into the bucket, then going into your heater?

Yea, it has been pretty quiet around these parts.  I blame some of it on more commonly used platforms like Facebook groups.  And maybe a little on the silly questions :D.  Unfortunately the spammers were going nuts and I had to implement something to stop them.  The questions help, but they are smart and can figure out the craziest of questions.  Welcome aboard and I hope you find some of the info out here helpful.  I wouldn't expect much in the way of interaction but it is always nice to see posts of users projects.

Enjoy and stay safe!

Wow, excellent write up, good job!  Yes it was long, but it was all interesting information and I read the whole thing  :D.  That is an interesting setup, so you are actually burning the fire inside the water to heat the water?  I guess just another way to build a boiler.  I do like the idea of having the fire outside of the house and use water to transfer the heat.  I did similar, but converted a home heating oil boiler and have it in the garage with with water pipes going into the house.  Heat is transferred using a plenum insert (basically a big radiator) and built a box similar to yours and used a squirrel cage fan from an old furnace to blow heat into the propane furnace ducts.  Thanks for taking the time to share and post pictures.  Awesome project.  And love the efficiency OCD too.  I get it, why burn to heat up the outside air... not really the point.  Get those BTU's inside, or Kw's as you refer to them  ;).  And I fully agree, the black diesel oil is the worse... black stuff will stain things up in a hurry.  I am always pleased when I get friends gasoline engine oil.  Its still sometimes brown and has a slight sweet smell of gas.

Thanks again and safe burning!

Temps are cooling down and time to start thinking about heating again for sure.  Your bucket truck sounds like a much safer option than a ladder!  And your 2 car garage project... sounds like you could make some serious heat!  Get looking for some more used oil sources  ;D.

Burn safe!

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Oil Suitability - Testing?

Good to hear that you figured out the problem Gerry.  Sounds like a nice digital gauge you got a hold of there, that should help keep track of what is going on with your pressure.

Greetings  Gerry!

I cant say that I have ever had problems with getting oil to burn.  Maybe I have just been lucky.  I run my PID nozzle heater at 200F or 93C and havent had any problems.  If you run known good used motor oil through it does it burn fine?  Is it just with this poor quality that you are having the problem?

800kb is a bit small these days.  I have increased the size to 3M.  Can you give it a try again?

Unfortunately spammers were getting out of hand.  had to tighten things down.  I can see if I can give you rights without jumping through all of the hoops.

Welcome Dwatbesgarage!

Is this happening after running the heater for a longer period of time?  Like at least a half hour?  It takes a while to warm up the inside of the heater and get everything up to temp so all of the oil burns.  Be sure everything is getting good and hot.  I would think as long as everything is good and hot it shouldnt smoke after shutting down.
