Waste Motor Oil / Re: Getting enough waste oil to run the house
« on: December 27, 2011, 09:07:20 pm »
Backwoods is correct on finding the smaller outfits.  I know an owner/operator of a semi and the guy does his oil changes himself.  With collecting over the summer, I have more than I can burn from this one person.  Now I dont run my heater continuously, so you might burn more than I do, but I am sure if you check around you can find as much as you need.

I transport all of mine in 2.5 gallon jugs.  I have a rotation of about 20 of them that seems to work pretty well.

Good luck in your search.

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Waste oil from airplanes

And even though the planes burn gas with lead, how much of that really makes it into the oil?

I would think the exhaust from the plane would contain more lead, but then again they are usually in the air when it is being burnt.  Or since it is lead, does it fall fast to the ground...Ha!

Greetings Buckrabbit!

Glad to see people from other countries visiting the site.

I would think a scaled down version would be fine, the only thing I would be worried about is keeping things large enough to handle the heat.  The fire needs to be good and hot in order to keep the oil burning clean, and you will want to be sure you have enough area to dissipate the heat and not have a melt down.  For example, making one out of a soup can probably wouldn't be a good idea  ;)

Other than that I cant think of anything else that may cause a problem, although I dont really have any experience with drip systems.  Thoughts from anyone else?

Good luck with your project!

Commercial Waste Oil Heaters / Re: best heater
« on: December 03, 2011, 09:26:04 am »
Hi Smitty,

Good question.  I think you will find that most of the people out on this forum are building or modifying heaters to burn waste oil, so unfortunately there might not be much help in the commercial heater area.

Maybe someone else will chime in here.

Best of luck finding a way to burn some free fuel!

Yes, the yahoo group altfuelfurnace is a nice resource that seems pretty active.  I was hoping some of the folks on that forum would venture over here as the yahoo layout is sort of confusing.  It's certainly worth checking out though.

Yes, knocking the power bill down is a good thing.

Us in the cold areas of the world spend lots of $'s in just heating bills.

Glad you found the forum.  Enjoy and stay warm and safe!

Temp Controllers and Thermocouples / Re: whick temperature controller?

Yea, I think that setup is going to work just fine for you.  Looks like all the parts are there in one package.

Hope all goes well putting it all together.  Have fun and dont burn anything you didnt intend to!

Temp Controllers and Thermocouples / Re: whick temperature controller?

Yes, you will need a thermocouple.  This is the one I have:
http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20_3&products_id=2&zenid=1cc141a6272fc835ef0068c3e18696ed

The relay output is normally used to control the preheater.  The controller also has alarm contacts that you can use to start the burner.   For example if you have the preheater on, then have the alarm contacts close when the heater has gotten hot enough, that in turn starts the burner.

Welcome Revolution!

You can go either way with your controller.  If you get one with SSR output, you will need to purchase a SSR seperately.  If you get one with the relay built in, then you dont need to purchase one seperately.  Just keep in mind the load and make sure the built in relay can handle it.  If it cant, then you may have to go external.

I think this is the one I went with:
http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=1&zenid=1cc141a6272fc835ef0068c3e18696ed

It is rated at 10A at 120V, which, if my calculations are correct, shoud be 1100W.  As long as you are under that wattage for the heater you should be fine.

Hope that helps.

Hello again!  Yes, hope to have a record crowd this year.  As for myself, gonna try experimenting with heating some water to transport some of that heat into the house.

Stay warm!

Waste Motor Oil / Re: need help

I dont know about the preheating of the air going into the heater, but disconnecting the heating elements shouldnt affect the blower at all.  I'm would bet that the fan runs on normal household voltage and disconnecting the heating elements is just going to lower the power consumption.

As for how long it will last, that I dont know.  I would think that they have a pretty long life, but the continuous use in a WO heater might be a bit much.  Give it a try and if it wears out too soon you may have to look for a different way to move the air.

Good luck with the heater!

Anyone else having trouble loading this site in FireFox?

Internet explorer seems to work fine for me, so I am thinking it is a FireFox problem.

How has it been working for the rest of you?

Waste Motor Oil / What do recyclers do with waste oil?
« on: October 30, 2011, 11:12:08 am »
Does anyone know what happens to oil that gets recycled at the public dump spots or the stuff that in & out oil change stations recycle?

I have never seen a bottle of new oil that says "made from 25% recycled oil".  I wonder if it gets turned into other tyeps of lubricants, or does it get burned somewhere?

Looking good!  That looks like quite a setup.  Getting things perfected is always a little tricky, but when they work good, lots of heat!

Enjoy the forum and hope to see more about your heater.
