I ended up getting some fireplace calk.  I think that is what it is called  ???   I sealed it up last year and now this year it has all cracked up, so I might have to redo it.  But it did seem to work well.

Sorry I cant help you out.  Most of us out here are do it yourselfers, and we are a pretty small crowd.  About all I can recommend is contacting some local heating contractors and if they dont do it, maybe they could steer you in the correct direction.

Interesting heater.  Thanks for the pictures!  Could you post more of it burning?  Are you using it just as a drip system?  Does it burn clean out the stack?

Thanks for the post!

Welcome back!  Yea, as it gets colder we start seeing more people.  I still havent gotten mine fired for the winter, but I'm going to soon!  Temps are falling, although we have had a nice fall here in MN.

Glad to see you back and hope to hear about your heater.

Later...

Here is a picture of the block installed, looking from the back.  The thermocouple is on the left side.  It seems to do a good job in this location.

We dont really have a basics of converting document.  Maybe in the future that will be something we have to work on.  Making the block was the difficult part for me because I dont have the tools to do the machining.  Yes, the oil should be well filtered.  I filter mine with a 5 gallon bucket strainer like the ones here:
http://www.dudadiesel.com/search.php?query=strainer+strainers

Then filter before the pump with a car filter.  Seems to do the job well for me.  Yes it should be well filtered, especially with a pressure system.  I believe that is one of the benefits of a siphon system, the system can tolerate dirty oil better.  I dont think small amounts of gas mixed in would cause a problem, but I think antifreeze can cause problems.

Yes, a drip style would be less picky when it comes to dirty oil, the bad part is regulating the oil flow to get a consistent temp.

I think converting a furnace is a great idea.  Maybe thats because thats what I did... ha!  The furnaces are safe and they are inexpensive to get a hold of.  I didnt have the tools or know how to make the cartridge heater, but thankfully I had a friend who is an expert in that area and he built the block for me.  The rest of the system came together pretty easily and inexpensively.

Good luck with your build!

I debated the same thing before my build.  The pressure system just seemed so much easier to start with.  But then again, I dont burn that many gallons per year.  Havent had any trouble with mine.  There is some cleaning involved when burning the dirty stuff, but that is probably going to happen with either style.  In the long run, siphon may be more reliable, but I didnt want to go through all the steps with the compressed air.  The siphon guys can probably list other pros with that type of system.
