Advice on buying a waste engine oil heater
« on: December 02, 2023, 11:24:44 am »
Hi
Plenty of waste engine oil going round hear

Looking to heat a box trailer up of an area aprox of 2.5 X 6 meters. Have a log burner in hear so if I could buy a space heater that will fit inside of the burner then i can put that inside the log burner or better still buy an oil burner that is flued

The usual tool shops round hear only sell Diesel space heater so i guess waster engine oil wont run on them

Hello Henney do dar,

I dont think I have ever seen anything small enough for that size space.  The diesel space heater would be a perfect size, but it looks like it soots up pretty fast if attempted to be run on waste oil.

I have now watched all of that video!
In the vid he critosises another YT vid, but I watched that one and another from the same youtuber as well

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyiUpFjwtlU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tiSEGO6pYI

Instead of running waste engine oil, he is running waste veg oil, but he is duel fueling it starting it up with heating oil then switch over the veg oil, also he has filtered the veg oil with a coffee filter and looks like he has had better results

But watching his vids, that diesel heater looks to be very inefficient indeed!

Intersting, I'll have to check those videos out.

The smallest one I have seen is a forced air propane furnace converted.  Its tough though be cause waste oil likes a deep chamber and any small stove is going to have a hard time with that.  I am thinking a pressure or siphon system.  Maybe a drip system would be able to be scaled down a little.  You could drip it into something small like a fish house stove.

A "forced air propane furnace". So is this just a typical diesel heat that they use in work shops? What did they do to convert them

I did try drop feeding it and it did not work! the liquid in the bowl over come how much the fire could burn

I think they call them portable diesel heaters:

https://www.amazon.com/portable-diesel-heater/s?k=portable+diesel+heater

I was refering the the red boxed one in the videos, in one of the videos it states it is a new China version of an old Webasto, but states no more

I am thinking a pressure or siphon system.  Maybe a drip system would be able to be scaled down a little.  You could drip it into something small like a fish house stove.

Have a look at this one for an idea on a drip feed into a bowl. There are 2 pipes to it, so I guess one is oil and the other is air. Should fit inside a log burner
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005928050385.html?isdl=y&aff_fsk=_oBXVPn9&src=Connexity2023GBchannel&aff_platform=aff_feeds&aff_short_key=_oBXVPn9&pdp_npi=2%40dis%21GBP%2154.95%2154.95%21%21%21%21%21%40%2112000034898510363%21afff&dp=17017925898300116949416001181008005&cn=326576&cv=90dc9d53ad3a459934a2d8241df6ed58
So I guess by pumping air into it you get a hotter flame and more of the fuel can be burnt at once unlike the problem I had before with the bowl just filling up with oil and eventully overflowing and just not hot enough at all. The photo shows it has a big flame to it too. But I dont trust it as though it has been photo shopped! The add has very little description to it and dose not state the address of the seller

Also look at all the photos they show a photo of a "valve". Well that looks lie a 1/4 turn ball vale to me. in other words a 1/4 turn is to fast to regulate a drip fed system unlike a 3-5 turn gate or needle valve

And this one; very very simular indeed!

But this one looks like the oil is not dripped into it; i would say its more like a filler tank hose. But as before zero description and no sellers address

But this one has a little better description
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004922865960.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000014.27.6d0cNn7NNn7NLu&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.40000.326746.0&scm_id=1007.40000.326746.0&scm-url=1007.40000.326746.0&pvid=33068101-a562-43fd-968d-84574985e562&_t=gps-id:pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.40000.326746.0,pvid:33068101-a562-43fd-968d-84574985e562,tpp_buckets:668%232846%238110%23376&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21GBP%21216.83%21173.46%21%21%21266.05%21%21%402103854017017926578883737e7b49%2112000031031978550%21rec%21UK%21%21AB
It states the following
Instructions:

2. Open the valve, let the oil flow into the burning furnace to a depth of 1 cm and then close the valve.

So they are saying that it is not a drip feed one you open the vale and let one cm of oil into the bowl. I guess that will not last long ay! But they are asking 173 quid for it!!!

But I guess they are only ever desinged for cooking a pan on and not for over night heating. Hay! I hear in China they burn dried dung on there log burners

It also states Webaco. But no mention of waste oil

This one on the other hand dose state waste engine oil
