Lanair HI 180 wont light
« on: February 14, 2013, 05:01:56 pm »
My furnace had been working great, but the other day the flame was not quite right started getting dark and short. Today she wouldn't light up. I cleaned all 3 filters, replaced the nozzel, cleaned oil heater block and air heater block. Verified have spark and even adjusted the electrodes. Still will not fire. Have oil psi at 4 and air around 12 thats where I usually run it. Checked to make sure im getting air to the nozzel and the air diaphram works properly. I ended up pulling the upper combustion chamber cover off so I could look to see if there was any oil mist. Stuck my hand in front of the nozzel (with the transformer disconneded) verifyied there is air flowing through the nozzel but had no oil. I am pulling my hair out trying to get this running. Seems like a fairly simple system but can't figure out why no oil is being sprayed. Hopeing someone can help me with this..

Hey Dave welcome to the forum. I'm not farmilair with a Lanair burner. After I service my siphon/metering pump system I need to bleed the oil supply side for 5 minutes or long to get oil back to the nozzle. Or it sounds like you have a plugged oil line. Does a Linair burner have a typical style fuel oil burner pump on it?

Thanks.  I bled this thing for quite awhile with the same result. The pump is remote mounted but looks like a typical fuel oil pump. I don't think it's air bound because it worked yesterday poorly and then today nothing. I have had this baby taken all apart and cleaned everything. With the same results I am quite puzzled.

The reason I asked about the pump is if it's a Suntec there is a screen in the pump that can get plugged.

I don't know how your burner and holding tank are set up, but there must be some blockage in the supply line. Is there a low spot in the line that my have iced up or collected sludge? Can you try compressed air from the pump back to the tank?

I removed the supply line from the burner and I have oil flow as well as oil flowing back to the tank from the regulator.  So I seem to be getting oil. From there it goes through a alluminum block with 4 passages to heat it which I disassembled and cleaned and then it flows into the gun where it meets with the air. When the burner calls for heat the air solinoid opens allowing air into the gun it then goes to a diaphragm at the rear of then gun that opens the valve to allow oil to flow into the nozzle and the air also mixes with the oil in the nozzle. Seems like a fairly simple system that's why I'm going crazy trying to make it work

With troubleshooting you have to eliminate what's working and not. After watching this video I would tear the burner assemble apart looking for a problem. I would look in the diaphram area for leak, cracked diaphram or possibly reassembled incorrectly not allowing the oil shut off from working.

After taking it apart again and cleaning the gun and nozzle it works.   Wow what a pain.  I had actually called they guy I got it from and he told me he used to have to clean the gun and nozzle multiple times sometimes before it would work.   Thanks for all your info.

Glad to here you got it fired up. Hope you'll still hang around the site some more and pass your knowledge on.
