I do like my boiler system. The boiler and tank are in a shed away from the house. Any spills and smells are away from the house. Been using a ckburner kit for six years reliability been very good. There has been some problem and not all have been do to the kit. There is also a learning curve.

I don't mean to talk you out of a waste oil system. Check with these companies and ask them about the reliability of their product. but if you had one installed and did have a problem you more then likely have to send the unit back for repair.
I built mine from a kit and can normally fix in a short time if I have the parts on hand. I did have a relay go bad one time and my burner was down for a day. I was glad I had a back up heat source.
Waste oil burners can be reliable.
Good luck.

Do you have access to enough waste oil to heat your home?

I would keep your tank for fuel oil. Waste oil burner do have problems and you will need a back up heat source.

There is some adjustability with a metering pump. I can't give you an answer about a flame of 10" or less. With a flame that small I'm not sure about the amount of btu's you would get.

I am running a metering pump. I did run my blast tube deeper into the burn chamber then CKBurners suggested I should run it shallow and I have ran it shallow every since.

The only part of my burner assembly that is in the burn chamber is the retention head. I hope this may help in some way.
I've never seen a burner with a tube that small.
Please keep us posted on your progress.

mine is a boiler, an aquastat signals the burner to fire and shut off. maybe russ can help you with the thermostat wiring.

after looking at old pictures of my forced air waste oil furnace. there is a fan limit control switch at controlled the burner. it had transformer on it run the 24volt thermostat.

what do you mean by over firing? what is running continuously, the burner , the hydraulic pump or both?

when my burner was throwing sparkles i cleaned everything and/or replaced some things in the burner. my problem was the metering pump screen and filter were almost plugged. cleaning them solved my problem.

I have another question. What would happen if your system stopped working for some reason or you ran out of oil or you didn't want to leave it unattended while on vacation. Is your system well insulated to avoid freezing? Do you have to have alternative heat in your shed? Would your heat exchanger back feed heat back to your boiler in the shed?

Thanks James

I had that issue on cold night. I'm sure that when you get your system up and running and when that happens to you, you will be able to figure it out.

my neighbor hand dug his water lines from the boiler to his house. I don't think they're over 2 feet deep. I'm sure he insulated them well.

water supply trenched below frost line

2) do you have a mixer installed ( I have read that especially with cast iron boilers the return needs to be mixed with a little of the supply to prevent boiler shock)?

you have me confused. you asked about my domestic water supplying the boiler system. then you ask about boiler shock with a mixer valve in the supply line. no mention of the mixer being in boiler supply line.

I have no temperature gauge in the return line to the boiler.

I say this with all kindness "it is possible to over think a project".
