I'm a little slow at putting my plans into action. I have been building my waste oil boiler in my head for a couple of years now. I do have some parts just not a boiler yet.I bacically want to do the same as your plans but probably not heat my shop unless I find a really big BTU boiler. Good luck on your build. Keep us posted on your build and pics or videos really make adifference!

First off welcome to the Forums! Second it looks like you have been doing this for a while and have some experience. I am still learning myself so some of the others may chime in to help also. I am basically planning to do kinda what you are doing. Depending on what part of the country you live in may determine what kind of insulated pipe you need. From what you have told us a sidearm exchanger would be a good fit with it's own zone. Maybe 3 zones. One for house. One for garage. One for water tank. OWB (outdoor wood boiler) insulated pipe would probably work (don't know if any will be buried or not) or just regular insulated pex for running through a heated space. Good luck!

Well there you go Russ. I don't know a lot about these closed loop systems but that certainly sounds like a good idea running anti-freeze.

Thanks Doug! I guess I'm a perfectionist. I have had trouble over the years starting or completing projects because if I can't work out all the little details in my head first it doesn't make sense to even start. My dad alwals says do something even if it's wrong. Appreciate the help!

I have another question. What would happen if your system stopped working for some reason or you ran out of oil or you didn't want to leave it unattended while on vacation. Is your system well insulated to avoid freezing? Do you have to have alternative heat in your shed? Would your heat exchanger back feed heat back to your boiler in the shed?

Doug I was asking 2 different questions. :D

1) about water suppy for adding to the system when needed and
2) mixer for boiler shock prevention installed in the (boiler out supply to your house)

I only have a crawl space like Russ. I was trying figure out if I needed to run a water line (below frost line) out to my shed or I found out by asking you which I never thought of that I could just add water as needed right in my crawl space and not have to run it to my shed.

Yes Russ, I have read that if you have 180* leaving your boiler you should not have more than 10* ( have read varying temps from 10*- 20* so...) difference in your return. With a mixer /bypass it take some of that 180* water leaving the boiler and t's off like a zone but feeds back to the return to the boiler so it tempers the return water so you don't get "Boiler Thermal Shock". Like I said I'm far from an expert and I am still learning and don't want anyone to have a short life for their boiler.

Russ there is a Honeywell safety control for Becketts that has a programable post-purge. Ithink up to 4 minutes.It help dry the retention head. Not sure if this is what you were talking about but this oil burner guy is funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vsiePKbH68&t=3s

That's good to know Russ. I am planning to put at least 2 maybe more in my shed. The boiler will help preheat the oil to room temp. They will be semi-permanent. No need to move just fill. Judging by Doug's boiler he uses between 800-1200 gallons so 2-3 330 gallons totes will be a good start. Still just napkin drawings at this point. Still no boiler!

Do you guys think that the oil is seeping past the solenoid or maybe residual oil in the pipe from the solenoid to the nozzle?

I found some 330 gallon IBC totes. I tought that if I had 2 of them they would make great waste oil storage tanks! Anybody think of a reason why these would not be a good idea? Thanks
