Waste Motor Oil / Re: What do recyclers do with waste oil?
« on: January 03, 2012, 07:55:25 am »
Curious. Does anyone know about the economics of the recycling business? Meaning, how much does a recycler get for the cleaned up oil he sells to a refinery or factory? I hear the recyclers pay about $.10 per gallon to the shops which generate the waste oil, but don't have any estimates of what they can sell it for.

Thanks,

Neil

Been away from the computer for a few days. Thanks to each for your replies.  I have found two bus depots in the area and will be approaching them shortly as well. One's run by the State, so I'm not too optimistic on this one. But the other's private and may not mind letting me siphon off 50 or 100 gallons once in a while. And like you said, this plus others' 20 or 50 will add up.  I need about 700 gallons per year total.

Thanks again.

Hi Backwoods,

Thanks for your feedback.  In your own case, does it add up to a lot of time and a big pain in the arse to collect 10 gallons here, 20 gallons there?

Thanks also for the regs on transporting the oil. I'd likely just use one 55 gallon drum or several larger gas cans so I can move them myself w/o needing a hand truck.

Waste Motor Oil / Getting enough waste oil to run the house

Hello all,

Coming up to speed on burning waste oil in the house is some odyssey.

Latest issue: securing enough waste oil.

The airport guys are good with allowing me to use their waste oil. But I need backup in case they ever change their minds.  Trouble is, all others that I've asked are concerned about giving theirs to me because of the "cradle to grave" responsibility they have. And I can't give them anything for their records showing it was disposed of properly. So they sympathize but dont' want the headache.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? If so, what did you do to allay concerns and get some reliable sources of waste oil to burn at home?

Thanks,

Neil

Thanks Backwoods.  Your advice makes sense.

If anyone else would like to weigh in, I'm all ears. Definitely would like to get additional opinions as well on this before going ahead and using it.

Thanks all.

Hello all,

I've been told that waste oil from airplane engines (reciprocal engines, not jets) tends to put off more soot and ash due to the aviation fuel's higher lead content than regular fuels.  Most of the fuel they use is called '100 low lead'. And while it's low lead, it apparently still has lead.

To anyone's knowledge, is this an issue?  I imagine it shouldn't be, as the oil and the gas don't mix in the engine. But I think the guy who told me this was referring to small amounts of waste gas that the guys in the shop throw into the waste oil drums.

Thanks for your input.

Welcome Center / Re: Legality of using a waste oil burner in one's home

So I live in the one state in the Union which requires a permit!  Thanks for the information, Frank. Much appreciated.

Now if I could just find in the NJ DOE's website how to obtain that permit...

Thanks,

NB

Welcome Center / Legality of using a waste oil burner in one's home

Hello all, and thanks for this forum.

My question has to do with whether or not it is legal and/or a likely violation of local fire codes to have a commercially-manufactured waste oil burner in the home as a primary (or secondary) heat source. Note: I do not produce a drop of waste oil myself but would get it elsewhere and transport it to my home in small quantities.

My research so far leans in the direction of "you can't do it, it's illegal" and some waste oil burner vendors won't sell me one. Others are happy to, however.

To make matters a little more confusing, my home owner's insurance has already approved me to install a waste oil burner, adding only a nominal premium increase to cover the second oil tank. And the local fire department simply wants to see my plans before they approve.

So I'm pretty confused. Are there any hard-and-fast rules to this? Is it jurisdiction by jurisdiction?  I'm in New Jersey and would appreciate any learned guidance.

Thanks.

NB
