Waste Motor Oil / Re: Ash Disposal
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:43:26 pm »
Good question.  If you end up finding any official information on disposing of ash, or even for burning waste oil, we should make it a sticky topic on the forum.

Hi Matthew,

From other reading I have done, hydraulic oil and transmission fluid seem to work fine.  I think I remember hearing that transmission fluid burns a little hotter.  I havent had experience with it myself, just from reading.  Maybe others have burned it themselves and can share what they know.

Good luck with the burner!

Probably just a dead form.  It gets a little more active as the winter goes on, so keep checking back, maybe someone will reply.

If I were to dispose of mine, I would put it in the garbage.  The garbage ends up in the incinerator.  So it would get burnt again.  Kind of re-fried beans...HA!

Sounds like you have yourself a good supply saved up.  I was just thinking of firing mine up to make sure everything works before it gets too cold out in the shed.

Good luck getting it tuned up and stay warm...

Greetings Stubborn66,

I think most are working with home made units, or modified residential systems, but maybe as it cools down and the board becomes a little more active, someone will have some ideas for you.

Good luck with your heater!

Hello,

Does your waste oil burner have a heating mechanism to heat the oil?  If so, is it running at the proper temp?

Not sure about the design of your heater, but I would check there first.

Good luck in finding the trouble...

Welcome to the forum.  We are glad you found us!

Your heater sounds interesting.  Glad to hear it works well for you.  If you get a chance, snap a picture and post it up for us to see.

There are a lot of ideas out here and things should start getting busier as it gets colder here.

Best of luck with your heater!

Hmm... interesting.  Could these be used to transfer oil?  For example from my 55 gallon drum to a 5 gallon bucket?  I am not concerned about speed, but how many gallons per minute would one pump?  Are they self priming?

Thanks for the info.

Greetings and thanks for sharing!  Nice job on the heater.

I'm not sure on how the turk works.  Is that a pump on the top of your oil storage tank?  I see a fan, what is that for?  I also see one of the pictures that has a computer power supply.  What is that used for?

Looking forward to learn more.

Thanks!

Greetings and welcome to the forum.  Things might be a little slow out here until the heating season is upon us, but maybe somebody will chime in and have some suggestions for you.

Does your burner have a nozzle heater on it?  My burner will flutter if the temp isnt high enough.  I couldnt figure out what was going on with it at first, but after some experimenting I found that the oil temp was not high enough.  I raised it and got a nice stead burn.

Good luck with your troubleshooting.

Very nice videos.  Thanks for sharing!  Thats quite a project, good job.  What kind of pump do you use to circulate the water?

Waste Motor Oil / Out of oil for the season?
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:17:04 pm »
Well, temps here are hitting 50 and the waste oil burning season is pretty much over.  Did everyone deplete their supply of waste oil over the winter?  I think I have about 75 gallons left yet.

Thanks to everyone for keeping the board active over the winter.  I'm guessing things will be pretty quiet over the summer here.  More chat next year!!

Temp Controllers and Thermocouples / Re: PID help
« on: April 08, 2011, 11:13:28 pm »
Yes, what Dead Eye said.  The PID I use has an alarm contact that is normally open and closes at a set temp, turning the burner on.  I havent automated my system to this point yet, but the alarm function is there.  Although this wont help with the lag time.
