It's basic purpose is getting air. But it also serves as a carrier for the plate that covers the flame. In this video its taken off so you can see how the burner works.
With that plate, the plate with wholes additionally heats up to approximately 950C or 1750F. That temperature is needed in order for carbon  to burn. Carbon lights up at 500-600C and that's the reason why all earthsandersmother  will never be anything else than a soot factory.

Moov,
Call me old and slow, I've watched your video several times now and I'm not sure I understand how your burner works. Can you give me some more details about your burner. It looks impressive.

Yes it is impressive! I to am a bit confused
It looks to me like a gun system fired into a thick steel plate full of holes that serves as a catalitic converter to ensure complete combustion. Very nice blue flames back there! Well done.

 What fuel is it using?
 Is this a siphon system?

 Thank you for this video.

Cheers  D.E.

Moov,
Yes, simple and still very impressive. I like it.  Thanks helping me understand your burner.
Is the air supplied with a compressor or is it gravity feed?

Hiya Moov,

I hope you're still able to see replies on this thread and answer them!

I had a go at replicating this burner based on your drawing but I'm having a little teething trouble, I think I may have ruined things with too small an air pipe and possibly not having a bit enough tray but I'm really not sure...any chance you could refresh that youtube link so I can see the real thing ion action?

Cheers,

Tom.
