Waste Oil Filtering / Re: how should i filter my oil
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:47:07 pm »
Kooklkris,

That is an interesting setup.  Will have to research it that a bit more.  I received my 5 gallon bucket strainers today.  I will let you know how they work.  Hopefully the filter mount will be here tomorrow.  Then I have to find a cartridge heater, thermostat control, and see if I can get the block made.  Man, at the rate I'm going, I wont need heat when this thing is finished!

Waste Oil Filtering / Re: how should i filter my oil

First off I was thinking of filtering the oil with a 5 gallon bucket filter a friend showed me.  I see they are available on ebay.  Just search for "bucket filter".  I see one guy selling a 4 pack.  You can mix and match sizes, 100, 200, 400, and 600 micron sizes.  They would help get the big stuff out.

Then was thinking of using a filter relocation mount like the one pictured below.  Not sure if one filter or two is the way to go?  I was thinking of using 2.  I found several different kinds on ebay.

Now this is all just waste oil flowing through pipes in my dreams, so others with experience can chime in here and let us know what is the best.

Thanks!

Waste Oil Filtering / Re: Whole house water filter

The more I think about it, I will probably do the spin on filter as well.  The water filter housing is all plastic, and being in contact with used fluids may deteriorate the plastic.  Probably kind of messy to change as well.  Is one filter enough, or would 2 in series be better?  I was thinking of a 2 filter setup with a higher micron filtering first, then a lower micron filter right before the pump.

Hello Snicks,

Good to see you back.  I think plans for a nozzle holder would be helpful for a lot of us.  I would be very interested in seeing your design.

In your experience, are you able to run 100% waste oil, or do you mix it with HHO?  A friend of mine just built a heater block and was getting quite a bit of smoke at 100%, but at 75% it was looking pretty good.

Thanks for your willingness to help and share.

Pressure Nozzle / Re: Suntec pump not working?
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:08:02 pm »
Thanks for the link.  I checked it out, but unfortunately my pump requires the deeper filter.  I did finally end up finding the filter I needed with the help of these guys catalog:
http://www.strainerscreen.com/

They have lots of parts for the suntec pumps plus other heating and plumbing supplies.  They dont sell directly to the public, but I found that patriot supply carries quite a bit of their stuff.

The strainer and gasket were cheap at patriot, but shipping was a killer.  I cleaned up the screen and had a friend seal the pump with some kind of sealant.  The pump is working great again.  By the looks of these pumps, there isnt much that can wear out on them.  I have only pumped diesel through it so far, but I am sure it will handle waste oil just fine.

Looking good!  Thanks for sharing.  Looks like you are going to have it nice and toasty for the rest of the winter.

I took the pump apart today and things looked pretty dirty.  Lots of junk in there.  I removed the screen and took the pump apart further.  It looks like the gasket (or whatever you call it) has a small hole in it.  I am guessing that is maybe why the pump isnt working?  I see patriot supply has parts, but without part numbers it is pretty hard to tell what a person needs.  Is it even worth rebuilding these pumps or is it best to buy a new one?  Here are some pics of what I found:

Fuel Oil Furnaces / Re: Lennox Furnace

Haha... yea it isnt the most obvious thing to do.  In order to see the attachment options, you have to click the "Additional Options" link below the message box.  When you click that it will show you an attach line.  Then you browse to where the pictures are located on your computer.  Currently you can only attach 4 pictures per message.  Is that too few?  Otherwise if you have more than 4 you could create another message.  Let me know how it works out.

Yea, the reducers looked suspicious.  I suppose it broke down and they were working on trying to fix it.  Thanks for the suggestions.  I will give them a try and see what I can come up with.  Otherwise a new pump might be in order?

Pressure Nozzle / Suntec pump not working?
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:54:07 am »
Well, I think the pump on my burner might be bad.  I have air, spark, but no fuel.  I removed the line going up to the nozzle and nothing came  out of the pump.  I opened the bleeder and fuel came out of there.  Not a real high pressure stream, but it was shooting out.  I will remove the pump this weekend and see if there is anything obviously wrong.  Is there anything I should look for while I have it apart?

Thanks!

Yea if you have a friend at a machine shop, you could probably get something working.  I think keeping the element out of contact with the oil is a good thing.  Also being able to insert a thermocouple and precisely control the heat would be nice.  My burner has a .85gph nozzle now and kyle suggested going down to a .65  What size nozzle you have?

That would be excellent.  That would be great to see how you have done things.

So you have a burner just like this one?  I have heard of others extending the blast tube.  In your experience do you think this is necessary?

Finally got power to my furnace tonight.  It didnt light because I didnt have fuel to it, but the blower started and the igniter was buzzing away.   Hopefully I can get some fuel to it tomorrow night and see if it will fire.  I pulled the burner out of the furnace and checked out the nozzle and electrodes.  Do all nozzles have that screen thing on them?
Next will be on to some kind of heating system for the oil.  Kyle, would you be willing to share how you are heating the oil at the nozzle?   I like your idea of heating it before the pump to take the load off the pump too.

Thanks!

Hey kookkris,

Sounds like you are at the same spot as I am.  Are the plans you purchased on ebay from the user donna-mike?  I have checked out his description and it sounds like he is doing a pressure system, but I'm not sure how he heats the oil.  I would like to avoid having the heater touch the oil also.  He sells a parts kit too but the way it looks it might put the heater in contact with the oil.  I think it might have been harpswelding that had a block heater posted on ebay a while back that looked pretty nice.  Kepners block is nice, but it is a siphon system.  I think I am going to start out with a pressure system first and see how that goes.  Hopefully others will share their ideas on how to get the oil heated before the oil gets to the nozzle.

Hello DNGSPOT,

Great writeup and pictures!  Thanks for sharing.  Looks like you have it burning pretty clean by the looks of the smoke stack.  I'm sure your writeup will help others.  Thanks again!
