Welcome aboard!

Glad to see all of the new members that have been joining lately!  The forum is still quite new and at times is pretty slow as far as posts, but hopefully that will change as we find new members to join.

Thanks for joining and feel free to share what you have done so far.  Pictures too if you have some!

Welcome Nik!

Your corner of the globe?  Where are you from?  Somewhere from the UK I am guessing?

Your beckett should work out well for converting.  Are you going to do a pressure system, or siphon system?

I cant say I have any experience with a centrifuge, but if you have questions about the burner, just ask and I might be able to help.

I agree with you about the free heat.  Doesn't get much better than that!  Fuel is so expensive this year.  Any savings is nice!

Waste Motor Oil / Re: collecting oil
« on: January 12, 2010, 06:09:29 pm »
Good deal.  Yea picking it up will be a little work.  Gonna need storage!  I found those tanks on craigslist:
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/grd/1519092120.html

I also see them on ebay.
Check in this category.  Trick is to find them close enough to go pick them up.  I think it would pretty slick to mount to a trailer or load in the back of a pickup.

Go get that oil!!   :)

Man, too bad about the pump burning up.  Maybe the ebay pump will hold up to the job.  Cant say that I have any experience in this area so I wont be of any help.  Wow, 500 gallons!  I guess the ad worked.  Is it all from one person, or several different people?  I might have to give that a try.

What kind of tank are you using for storage?  I kind of like the idea of the tanks that are enclosed in a cage like the one below.

Waste Motor Oil / Cleaned the furnace today
« on: January 10, 2010, 05:10:38 pm »
And here is what I found.  There were a few big chunks if the hard ash stuff in the burn chamber also.  Didn't have to burn many gallons to get to this point.  Keeping a wast oil burner going is quite a bit of work, but cutting wood is a lot more work... ha!

Fuel Pre-Heaters / Re: What temp should oil be preheated to?
« on: January 04, 2010, 08:55:30 pm »
Well, I found out why I was getting the woof, woof, woofing when my burner was running.  The temp was too low.   I had the PID set to 200 degrees and sometimes it will overshoot the temp and I noticed that when it got around 210 or 215 things would even out.  I upped the temp to 220 now and it is burning smooth again!  I'm not saying that the oil is actually that temp, but that is what the thermocouple is sensing.  I never gave it any thought because we had been talking cooler temps earlier.  I guess each system varies a little, so it is a good idea to experiment a little.

Later....

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Neighborhood Acceptance of Burning Used Oil

Just something to add to this that I thought of the other day... The neighbors diesel pickup stinks worse than my WO burner!  I know diesels have their place, but boy, they sure do stink.  ;)

Waste Oil Filtering / Re: Sooty smoke?
« on: December 24, 2009, 09:11:52 pm »
Hello,

Sounds like the soot may be the result of the fuel to air ratio not correct.  I suppose you might always get some soot, but it sounds like you are getting a little too much.  I cant say that I have any kind of soot buildup with my pressure system.  It is probably a little harder to perfect the air mixture with a drip system.  Maybe someone with experience with drip systems can suggest something to try.

I've been running mine around 200, maybe I will turn it down a bit.  Dont want plugged nozzles!

Waste Motor Oil / Re: Burning different types of oil

Hi Woodjointer,

I moved your topic on its own because it is a good question.

If you are getting transmission fluid mixed in with the oil, I wonder if that is maybe burning a little hotter?  I am guessing the rotella is the 15w-40 version which I wouldnt think is much different than any other motor oil, just a little heavier.  I would guess the other things mixed in with the stuff from your mechanic is what is raising the temp.

Anyone else have some ideas?

Yes, on the intake.  But I suppose that might put the flame out?  I'm not sure as I havent played around with the drip systems before.  I have a similar problem with my pressure system if the wind is coming form the wrong way.  Everything is fine until I turn the heater off.  Then I get a back draft at times and it blows smoke into the garage.  Its just too darn windy here!

Yea I suppose the neighbors could get a little uptight about the black soot.  When it is burning good and hot is there much smoke coming out of the stack?  Maybe you need some sort of fan to keep the air moving in when it is windy outside?

Buy - Sell - Trade / Sealant for exhaust pipe
« on: December 07, 2009, 10:09:18 am »
The exhaust on my Lennox furnace is an oval connector and in order to connect to it I had to bend my round exhaust pipe to an oval shape.  The connection isn't very good and I see there is some leakage around it.  I have the metal tape for sealing up the sections of pipe but the tape wont work very well on the furnace itself.  Does anybody know if there is there some type of high temp caulking that would work in this situation?

It finally got cold enough to start the oil burner back up.  Had some pretty mild temps in November, but now that it got cold, had to get the fire burning.  I took the burner out because I was having some problems getting the burner to light.  Thought it might be dirty after running it last year.  Below are the pictures of the burner after about 10 hours of burn time last year.  I started to wipe the block off and remembered I better take some pictures.  I was surprised at how clean it actually was, although 10 hours isnt really that much.  I cleaned things up and changed the tip to a new .65gph B - solid cone.  It lit pretty well and when I got the air and pump pressure dialed in it was burning nice, but maybe a little too focused with the solid tip.  Things were getting red hot.  I will probably switch back to the A - hollow tip.

The last shot is a little hard to tell what it is.  It is a picture of the inside of the burn chamber.

Here is some good reading that another forum member shared with me:

It's kind of long, but has some good information.
