Commercial Waste Oil Heaters / lanair hs90 hot shot
« on: December 15, 2010, 05:45:57 pm »
anybody know anything about these? the guy on at lanair told me i won't be able to get parts. that raises 2 queetions: 1) is it true, or is there another aftermarket seller. and 2) are there parts i will need, meaning are there "disposable " parts or parts that need changing annually..or...

thanks for any help

the conversion was simpler than i'd like to admit. i just bypassed the "carburator" and went direct into the pot. the oil trickle inthe pot on the bottom, so its not really a "drip" style. from what ive learned here and at MEN, it shouldn't work as well as it does. since there is no preheater, and it is basically vaporizing from a puddle instead of a spray or a drip. maybe that's why it takes so long to establish draft. (about 10 min, is that long?)

the pics don't do the flame justice, because it doesn't burn nearly as well with the door open. with the door shut i can see that the flmes are blue near the air ports.

also i haven't finished my flue yet. you can see in the pic. that is directly west facing too. that caused it to go out yesterday. i don't think it will be a problem once it is vertical and back draft protected.

you can also see in a pic that one burner is broken. i bought a brake drum from the auto bone yard for some cast to fix it. and i am missing the piece that sits on top of the 5 legs. does any body know what it looks like, so i can make one. probly out of  a 5" floor drain cover.

i got this siegler keorosene (?) burner today. it has a carburator with floats etc. it is drip fedits own onboard fuel  so i thought i would just try it with waste oil.

 didn't work.

tried removing the filter for faster flow.

didn't work

thinned the oil with gasoline

didn't work

bypassed the carb and used the petcock as flow regulator

worked great!!

i realize its not as cool as building your own from scratch, or heavy mods of a furnace, but man was it easy. if you ever see one.... grab is my advice

the whole thing took about one half hour.

i think ultimately i want to convert a furnace.... but, from talking to people about this, my brother in law pulled a well pressure tank out of a garbage truck for me. ( in front of a lot  of people, and it was pretty gross. none of which would have bothered me, but it was pretty nice of him to swallow his pride for me) so i want to try making a drip like the roger sanders first. so far i have $6 into it.

this will also give me a chance to research oil furnaces that are good for converting. and i can wait to find a good deal. (like free)

does anybody own the roger sanders book? i would buy it if his advertising for the book was better. sure his stove is good, but does hte book tell me how to build it well? like trouble shooting, minimums, alterations, and most of all theories, or the logic behind it.

here's an example: the MEN furnace uses a coiled preheater. pretty simple, and seems likke it would work. is there anything in the book that explains why i would seek out any other system. (or why he ever did)

do you have a link to the "basics of converting"? i can't seem to find one. i don't know about changing to a block, or building a block.

does the oil have to be super filtered, with no gas or antifreeze etc. i don't know if i can demand pure oil from my sources.

drip style seems to me would take just about anything that comes into the burner, as long as the fuel line didn't get plugged.

Waste Motor Oil / just looking to get started

i had it in my head that i was gonna build a drip style burner. like the mother's . for a couple reasons, i am hoping to burn oil and all other fluids that accumulate mixed. drip style seems less fussy, y/n? second, i don't like alot of roaring noise when i'm working. i found that i would rather work in the cold to some extent than listen to my torpedo heaters.

i scored a free fireplace and all the tin last night, and started thinking.... why not burn wasteoil in it?

then i started looking on craigslist for an electric water heater to make the mother's style, and stumbled into a couple cheap oil furnaces. that's when i sought out this furum to learn how to convert an existing oil furnace into a wasteoil furnace.

now i just want to hear the pros and cons.

MONEY IS a huge factor!! so much so that i hope someone gets back to me soon and talks me aout of the fireplace idea, so i can sell it at an auction this saturday

hey guys, i sure am glad your here. i thought i knew enough about stuff to just build a burner some afternoon. but after looking into my options it appears as though the wise man would build upon others labors and knowledge.

if someone could point me in the right direction... i want to way all the pros and cons of a few different styles. which threads are good for a guy just starting out?
