Constant Level Device / constant level, well sort of
« on: January 13, 2011, 07:43:12 pm »
Im going to use a standard heating oil pump to feed my siphon nozzle (waste motor oil). my plan is to plumb the line from the pump to the nozzle and use a T. one from the pump one to the heater block and another "larger" tube as a bypass with no restriction back to a tank or the inlet to the pump. all thats needed, remove the ball in the standard heating oil pump pressure regulator leave in the spring and it creates just enough restriction to pump fluid with very little pressure and it is way easier on the pump not having to make 100 psi with non heated oil....   I tried this on a now abandoned babington burner project and it worked rather well. for this it would need the bypass at the heater block to make sure it had all the fuel it needed without excessive pressure. some tinkering would get it all nailed down.

Compressed Air Sources / refrigerator type compressor

Anyone tried one of these compressors ? I would like to know your findings before i cannibalize a fridge. similar ones can be found in window ac's freezers etc. I see them as being whisper quiet, reliable and capable of high pressures. The ? is about volume.  thanks in advance

Fuel Pre-Heaters / waste oil pre heater thoughts
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:12:38 pm »
I would like to use a copper pre heater block instead of aluminum, it transfers heat almost twice as good. wont cost a million and is still easy to work with as far as machining goes.
I also would like to use a small heating element say 200 watts 120 v with a thermal couple and temp controller. the oil would flow in a u shape around the element twice through the block and then off to the thermal couple and out the siphon nozzle. I believe it would be efficient in heating the oil but am not sure about the wattage rating being enough.
I intend to flow about 1.5 gal an hour possibly more depending on heating demands.
Another thought run a tube through the fire box with the by pass oil from the pump to help with pre heating, located in such a way that it wont over heat the oil.
Any help would be great thanks in advance
