Waste Motor Oil / Too Much unburnt oil
« on: October 07, 2021, 02:55:13 pm »
Hello all,
I have been using an inherited waste oil burner for a few years now.  I have posted in previous years and people here were such a big help!  My unit is old.  very old.  a Clean Burn unit.  but it has been running good the last couple years since I rebuilt it.  it is a burner mounted onto a converted coal boiler.  Anyways, end of last year, I started having this random problem where it would just randomly shut itself on and off real quick.  like the whole thing lost power, then suddenly got power.  that problem manifested itself worse the beginning of this year, and I traced it to a bad controller - not a big deal, done.  But I actually moved my whole burner to a different spot in the room over the summer (lots of renovations in the furnace room including replacing my main soft coal boiler with a stoker)  Anyways, so the issue I am having now, is too much unburnt oil, when i shut it off and open up my unit the inside of my boiler is coated with oil - and the smoke out the flue is not clear like it usually is.  I thought I wasnt getting good spark, but my transformers tests ok (I can pull a real good spark with a screw driver) but my electrodes were pretty crappy, so I replaced them.  They are positioned right according to specs.  it is now running better (more consistently) but I still have unburnt oil.  I turned the oil pressure down a little lower than where I kept it last year, about 5psi or just below (last year around 6) but still no difference.  I am trying to figure this one out

Things that changed during the renovations
- using a different chimney
- possibly sucking a little more air (I havent adjusted the air inlet at all, but I see a few small gaps around it that I havent finished caulking)

Would any of these effect it?  I thought too much air should not cause unburnt oil, but maybe i am wrong?
I am going to caulk it more, today or tomorrow, But wanted to get the ball rolling with some opinions.  Thanks for the help!

Waste Motor Oil / Burning heating oil in waste oil furnace
« on: April 05, 2019, 10:29:08 am »
Hey all,
somebody im acquainted with stopped in my shop today and said they have about 100 gallons of 5 or 6 year old heating oil, that the ethanol separated in it, and they are unable to use it in their furnace because the thick ethanol on the bottom keeps clogging his nozzle, etc.  he wanted to know if i wanted it for my waste oil furnace.  is there a problem with burning heating oil in a waste oil furnace?  i have a older Clean Burn furnace.

i would mix the heating oil in with the oil, i wouldnt burn straight heating oil.  if you all think its ok, my questions would be, how much/what ratio would you suggest mixing in a 275 gallon tank.  also, when he drops the oil off at my shop (in drums) do you think i should avoid pumping the bottom 6 or 8 inches of the barrel to avoid the ethanol, or will that not be a big problem in the waste oil furnace?

thanks for the help guys!

Waste Motor Oil / Oil pressure regulator
« on: February 18, 2019, 07:26:46 am »
Hey everybody, I have an old style Clean Burn waste oil heater, bolted onto an old old coal boiler - something i inherited with the purchase of a property.   anyways, I think i could use a new oil pressure regulator - for one thing, my gauge is not working at all, and plus, i constantly have to adjust the pressure, i think its cutting in and out.  so my question is, where should i shop for one?  im guessing i dont have to get it straight from clean burn, i feel like that might be an expensive route?  any aftermarket ones available?  sites to shop?  im relatively new to burning waste oil, this is only my second year, and I haven't purchased anything for it yet! haha.

thanks for the help!

User Projects & Pictures / Please help, Newby Maintenance!
« on: August 22, 2018, 07:55:49 am »
Hello everybody,
I am new here to the forum, also new to burning waste oil.  i just recently bought an automotive repair shop that has a waste oil heater in it.  the primary source of heat is a massive coal boiler, and the back up is the waste oil.  i bought the shop last december (already  winter time) and everything was working OK, for the most part.  sometimes there were issues, but they all got resolved one way or another haha.  I do want to use the waste oil heater a little more (or learn to incorporate it in a little more to cut back on coal - i am new to burning coal as well! haha!)  But to start out, I want to make sure that things are running as efficiently as possible, i do not know much about waste oil furnace maintenance.

basically, I have a waste oil burner bolted onto an old coal boiler.  the waste oil is in a 275 gallon tank, which is siphoned/pumped with a gear pump on the floor, first going through a micron filter before it gets to the pump.  then goes up the wall and over and down to the burner, first going through another spin on filter.  that is basically my set up.

I imagine the coal burner is probably not the most efficient way to utilize the waste oil burner, but not much I can do about that right now.  to me, it just seems the 'cavity' inside the coal boiler is too big for the flame of the waste oil burner, that it takes a lot to heat it up and get it to temperature.  is this a possibility?  i thought about filling the bottom of the coal boiler with some sand to take up space and also the sand would get hot and stay hot.  bad idea?

i am not really sure what waste oil burner i have, besides the numbers off of it.  I was told it was made by Clean Burn, but according to the sticker the company is called Clean Energy Inc?  and then the following model number CB85HS.  and another Label Serial Number: 5969.   Is that the information that i need whenever getting parts for this thing?

What maintenance should i be performing to this thing before winter?  I was told/taught how to clean the nozzle, which ive done/will do.  it has two filters, a micron filter which i was told never to let the gauge get into the red, if it gets close to the red then i take the filter out and clean it - it never budged last winter.    the other filter is a large spin on/off filter which was changed last year.

I know that I do need a new oil regulator.  the regulator functions when you increase or decrease pressure, but the gauge is not working so i do not know what the pressure is at any given time.   where can i find one of those?

I am  trying to post some pictures, but i cant figure out how!  haha

thanks guys!
