Russ,  I'm 400 miles out from Anchorage in the bush country. No roads, but a lot of runnable rivers. Fuel is barged up from Seattle. - diesels

Buy - Sell - Trade / Re: Sealant for exhaust pipe

Most all 100% silicone caulk is rated to 500F. If the flue gas stream is hotter, the silicone hardens into its constituent components ( brown chunky granules). You should have a folding spike type digital temp thermostat to test the flue gas temp. Everybody should have a folding spike type digital temp thermostat. This instrument tells you what is that you cannot see. You want less than 450F. If you vent 450F through a safe flue, you are being smart and run little chance of burning your house down. I have used silicone caulk for years in sealing flues, cleanout doors, and other flue related chores. The tape is OK but costs! - diesels

Fuel Oil Furnaces / Re: New Boiler Information Needed
« on: June 29, 2014, 04:30:51 pm »
questseeker,  Is your current boiler leaking? Have you had a peek on the wet side through an unscrewed fitting? If your boiler is not leaking, you do not need a new boiler! The boiler guys love to sell new equipment. If it is summer where you live you have time on your side! Take a deep breath an check all of your options before you take the new boiler plunge. You still have your money and a warm summer working for you. - diesels

Welcome Center / Hello from 13,000 HDD and $7 a gal heating fuel

It gets cold here! So damn cold that when you face the winter wind, the mammalian dive reflex kicks in! I service about 7 Chinese food restaurants and all the attendant grease. I love grease. The more you blend with the $7 a gal fuel oil, the cheaper the heating bill here gets (If luckey, maybe even cheaper tfuel costs than where you live!). The good stuff is cheap as dirt on eBay, and they don't start questioning your lack of heating service background you're in. BUT you can burn down your house if you are not observant and ask a lot of questions? There are lots of computer chip controls that will cover your ass if you are a newbie. Did I mention that YOU NEED TO ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS?!! Consider doing you initial trials outside away from the house.

This stuff is not rocket science. People here want you to help cut down on using petroleum and getting a second use from an atmospheric carbon fuel that may go to waste in your area. This Shit matters! Go hug a whale or something. - diesels
