Waste Vegetable Oil / Re: Adventures with WVO, etc Part II
« on: October 04, 2013, 12:57:03 pm »
Old doesn't mean bad.

Reading the malady of melt-down during R&D leaves me curious.  If I remember correctly, aluminum melts around 800 F.
 - That alone makes it completely unsuitable for a burner plate.
What did Bucky finally use that would stand the heat produced?

I'm trying to dodge cutting a bigger hole (requires a new door, sealing, etc.) to use a cast iron Dutch oven.
Because this is going into my house, cleanliness is mandatory.
Fuel & fire must be properly contained with no black oozing onto the hearth.

When I was a kid in the cold & snowy mountains (1/2 a century ago), many folk used oil stoves with the fire contained & little or no chimney smoke visible.  Warmed to a usable constant viscosity, filtered waste oil should (should, I say) exhibit flow, burn, and heat production characteristics similar to #2 stove oil.

Rant off.  Fire at will.

Howdy folk,

If you have or had a drip system, please share that experience & knowledge of
the Good & the bad, likes & dislikes, symptoms & remedies, changes, temperatures, fuel consumption - EVERYTHING.
(Inquiring minds & all that)
Thanks

hey Nick,

Here's that pulse-jet heater link I should have had for the above post
<cue fanfare>

The current TMEN site makes articles a nuisance to read, but some are worth the hassle.
My apologies for the delay.
SHALOM!

YES, remove the heating element.
Again, with emphasis, REMOVE HEATING ELEMENT and proceed with blower.
 - Removed, there is no way it can make unplanned contact with a live wire, which will still be 120VAC.
It won't blast you into another dimension or rip a hole in the fabric of space. ;D

Does the area smell like fried chicken now?
It did when I burned it in my truck. ;D

Any ideas on why to not mix WVO & WMO?
It's mixed in my tank.

Inquiring minds are wringing their hands.

SHALOM, Nick!

You might like this.  Or not.
While re-reading this thread, I remembered the "portable space heater" on my back porch.
It's a fume spewin' kerosene burnin' jet engine.
Well, OK . . . it ain't no jet engine, it just looks like a small brown one.
It ain't from space, neither, but it is portable.
It's rated 30,000 BTU output and needs a thorough clean-out 'cause it won't burn waste oil, as is.
It is slated for "one of these days" modifying to burn WMO.

Back when kerosene could be had cheap, TMEN built a drip kerosene heater for an Ecovillage greenhouse.
I used to have the 1-page article.  It's now SOMEWHERE on disc.
They made it from rain gutter downspout and hung it on a wall, intake down low, exhaust at the top.
It sputtered while burning, like early WWII German jets.
Happy Easter!

SHALOM, Ryan!
Yessiree, "hygroscopic" was the term.  Yes, it was.  Yes, it was.  Amazing capillary action with a turbo.
 - It came to mind even before reading your reply.
Question 4 you:
Was the "last flooding episode" oil in the stove, or water that refused to stay in the river?
 - Either could develop badly.
Severe OIL flooding could soak the rope, then drip externally (or worse).
Merely burning it empty should be on video.  Steel changing colors to bright orange is psychodelic.
If it burned that hot while clearing, was the exhaust clear - or like you said x 3?
Plus, ya gets warpage.
Thanks for the link.  I'll go see after this http://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/3516583274.html

Hope you had a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hey Russ...
Some Spam trash got in when you weren't looking.

I'll ask next time Jeff calls from "out there on the Big Road," though I think we spoke of roughly 100+ psi on his system.
Where ever it tops, it's a somewhat less than spirited trip, yet plenty volume & psi to run an airbrush.

Waste Oil Filtering / Re: Whole house water filter

Thanks, Doug.
I stand corrected. :-[
 - Swapped directions on cypherin' my goez-intas & my timeses with gloves on my feet - doubling, rather than halving mesh size.  Or words to that effect.

O no, sir.  Thank you.

Lest any would wonder,
I know how to blow-up things by accident; I'm an electrician.

10-4 on those roof leaks, double.  I be chasin' lesser ones with Cool Seal until I can do it properly.

Warm is good.  Glad to hear you "got it goin' on."  Have you run it long enough to get a feel for fuel consumption?  I ask everyone about mpg, hoping to hear one of you rascals ahead of me is doin' it on less than 1 gal/day.

Please remain calm.  This is NOT a thread-jack.
It's none of my business, but if you can swing the time involvement to wrap that shop with a thick blanket, wind & rain should stay outside, and it will require less heat.  With papercrete & earthbag construction, my un-built barn is much nearer.  Insulation is important.  40 - 50 years ago, most buildings in Appalachia had none.  I was 14 before even hearing of it.

Inquiring minds are bangin' their heads.

Sure.  Why not?
I don't think it would be hotter than a small foundry.
Expect to line things with fire brick and refractory cement.

With God, all things are possible.
