Waste Motor Oil / Re: secondary heat exchanger
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:39:06 am »
my heater has steel pipe running through it . i can tae enough heat out of the stove that the draft stops. with the set up you are gonna use i dont thin you could pull enough heat off it to stop the draft. my stac temps range around 150 degrees f unless i over do it on the fan and slowly the draft stops and smoes out the shop

more surface area more heat. remember these heaters use draft so too much may remove too much heat from the stac thus reducing draft. i would double the size of the tan you are using now. most of the 55 gal drum heaters use 2 drums. thin about a clean out for the upper one.

run it straight out the roof. the exhaust of a oil burner has some nasty stuff in it. at some  point the fan will fail causing many problems.... my two cents worth.

That heater you referred to the truc drum one ....... its awesome.. i have one and it heats my 1700 square foot shop. i dont have any drums on mine but have an old compressor tan with pipes running through it and a fan to pump out the heat

Constant Level Device / constant level, well sort of

Im going to use a standard heating oil pump to feed my siphon nozzle (waste motor oil). my plan is to plumb the line from the pump to the nozzle and use a T. one from the pump one to the heater block and another "larger" tube as a bypass with no restriction back to a tank or the inlet to the pump. all thats needed, remove the ball in the standard heating oil pump pressure regulator leave in the spring and it creates just enough restriction to pump fluid with very little pressure and it is way easier on the pump not having to make 100 psi with non heated oil....   I tried this on a now abandoned babington burner project and it worked rather well. for this it would need the bypass at the heater block to make sure it had all the fuel it needed without excessive pressure. some tinkering would get it all nailed down.

Compressed Air Sources / refrigerator type compressor

Anyone tried one of these compressors ? I would like to know your findings before i cannibalize a fridge. similar ones can be found in window ac's freezers etc. I see them as being whisper quiet, reliable and capable of high pressures. The ? is about volume.  thanks in advance

500 watts it is then, I will build the block and report my findings. Thank you

Less cost for electric provded it does not run all the time. and smaller overall size.  in theory it would need less to heat because copper conducts heat almost 2x better. how is his heater/ bloc set up ? is it made of aluminum ?
once up and warm i would not shut it off unless necessany.... Thanx

Fuel Pre-Heaters / waste oil pre heater thoughts
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:12:38 pm »
I would like to use a copper pre heater block instead of aluminum, it transfers heat almost twice as good. wont cost a million and is still easy to work with as far as machining goes.
I also would like to use a small heating element say 200 watts 120 v with a thermal couple and temp controller. the oil would flow in a u shape around the element twice through the block and then off to the thermal couple and out the siphon nozzle. I believe it would be efficient in heating the oil but am not sure about the wattage rating being enough.
I intend to flow about 1.5 gal an hour possibly more depending on heating demands.
Another thought run a tube through the fire box with the by pass oil from the pump to help with pre heating, located in such a way that it wont over heat the oil.
Any help would be great thanks in advance

some of  the buttons on my computer dont function. so may be hard readng.
there should be no to very little oil in the pot. except just after start up and thats only because its not up to temp.  up to temp is around 400 plus degrees on the bottom of the pot or pan. i use half a cup of gas to get mine going and light it fast so no fumes buld up .
running properly it should burn as fast as it drips in.  the tric to ths burner ...draft  ...seal any holes that are past the cyl liner even up the stac 12 feet or more of 6 " is about minimum. . i run about 20 feet of 6 " all seams taped w exhaust wrap.
i also found the deep pot a challenge to run so  got a shallow pan of the same size and its great easy lighting.

mine puffs out the holes in the cly  when first firing cold .. too much fuel .. low draft or a restriction in the stac
the 5 or 6 holes in the lid are plenty you dont want too much more than 5 or 6  5/16 holes or the ash wll be hard to remove.and may not be a clean burn  also must be close to air tight to the pan. or less holes

the amount of holes in the  cyl and where they are placed maes a huge difference. close to the bottom heats the pan better further away less. deep pan more holes closer to the bottom . i haved a mx of small holes on the bottom and larger ones up top. the amount of holes and size in the cly liner dictate how much oil you can burn.  more holes more oil ...... hope ths helps

Waste Motor Oil / Re: May need bigger tubing ?
« on: January 10, 2011, 08:06:30 pm »
2 gallons in 4-5 hours probabally not enough fuel to make the heat you want. roughly 60000 btu an hour at that rate if you can harness all the heat and your not judging by your stac temp ....my stove is set up differently. external temps vary 200 to 600 and stac temps are  150 or less no smoke. .. i say add more oil and you also may need more air.... hope this helps

how much oil are you using ? there are only so many btu per gallon. i use waste motor oil.  heat a bigger shop and use about 3 to 4 gallons a day granted not to 75 degrees but 65 is plentywhen its 20 out. measure the stove temp and stac temp ...gravty feed ?
